MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES

MEMORIAL DAY IS A UNITED STATES FEDERAL HOLIDAY OBSERVED ON THE LAST MONDAY OF MAY. FORMERLY KNOWN AS "DECORATION DAY," IT COMMEMORATES UNITED STATES MEN AND WOMEN WHO DIED WHILE IN MILITARY SERVICE TO THEIR COUNTRY.

MEMORIAL DAY WAS OFFICALLY PROCLAIMED ON MAY 5, 1868 BY GENERAL JOHN LOGAN AND FIRST OBSERVED MAY 30, 1868 WHEN FLOWERS WERE PLACED ON THE GRAVES OF UNION SOLDIERS. IT WAS THEN EXPANDED AFTER WORLD WAR 1 TO INCLUDE AMERICAN CASUALITIES OF ANY WAR OR MILITARY ACTION.  A "NATIONAL MOMENT OF REMEMBRANCE" RESOLUTION WAS PASSED DECEMBER 2000 WHICH ASKS, THAT AT 3:00 P.M. LOCAL TIME, ALL AMERICANS TAKE A MOMENT TO REMEMBER ALL WHO HAVE FALLEN IN SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. ANOTHER AMERICAN TRANDITION, IS TO FLY THE FLAG AT HALF-STAFF FROM DAWN UNTIL NOON LOCAL TIME ON MEMORIAL DAY.  MANY PEOPLE OBSERVE THIS HOLIDAY BY VISITING CEMETERIES AND MEMORIALS.
